TALK TO ME
Santos, Brazil
When Nathália arrived to work with me and be a photographer at City Hall, I knew very little about Libras. Because she is deaf and we are in the middle of the covid pandemic, lip reading with the mask was impossible. It wasn't easy, but she taught me sign language and I, the tricks of photojournalism. She told me how she felt neglected on occasions because she was deaf. From a lady who pushed her for having her back turned and not answering a question to being sidelined at another job.
Despite this she doesn't complain and always has a smile on her face. We always talk about daily things, like a problem with the bank or how difficult it is for her to get her young son out of bed and off to school. Despite the tantrum he throws, she manages to take him without more complications than a short delay to get to work. Today she lives with her mother and son, but in the future she wants to have her own place.
Talk to Me is about the importance of acceptance of people with disabilities by society. Regardless of the degree of difficulty necessary for adaptation, everyone deserves respect and dignity.
