EVERY RITUAL IS A PARTY

Santos, Brazil

With how many songs and dances is there a party for Iemanjá, the great African mother of Brazil? She is the orixá, Goddess of African matrix religions such as Candomblé and Umbanda. Iemanjá, the Queen of the Seas, represents the water element and has become one of the main regent goddesses of motherhood. In this joyous religion, everything is celebrated with the sound of songs, dances and food, including funerals.

Gifts are still offered to the queen of the sea in exchange for requests. Nowadays, concerned with the environmental issue, they are asked to offer only organic materials, such as fruits and flowers.

Today, with an increasing freedom of expression of different creeds, the celebration is gaining more fans in Santos.
